Welcome Histories and Technologies Class!

Street photography is an unbroken tradition which extends back to the invention of photography itself. It revels in the poetic possibilities that a curious mind and a camera can evoke out of everyday life. For the last twenty years the candid photography of life in public has been flourishing.

This has been largely stimulated by the creation and availability of digital cameras, increasing self-publishing opportunities, a plethora of photo blogs and a change in social attitudes towards street photography.

Our focus is on the emergence of fashion street photography. We will highlight the links between the technological development of the camera, the street fashion evolution (as inspired by Bill Cunningham), the changes in social attitudes regarding photography and the overarching theme which inextricably ties these three notions together – communication.
